About the Event

In what has become a favorite SFOA Parish tradition sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 7672, we gather near the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi (October 4), in remembrance of his love of all creatures, to bless the animals who bring us joy.

All creatures are welcome to receive the blessing (in baskets, cages, containers, or on leashes as needed to protect them from other nearby animals). Animal lovers are invited to bring their pets to have them blessed and gently sprinkled with holy water. The services are a way of thanking God for the pets that bring joy to so many.

“All praise to you, O Lord, for all these

brother and sister creatures.”

A Blessing of the Animals

Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. On the fifth and sixth days of creation, you called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired Saint Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless the animals and all living creatures. By the power of your love, enable them to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.

At this time and in honor of our Patron Saint, Saint Francis of Assisi … consider donating pet food or gently used blankets and towels to our local animal shelter, Suncoast Animal Shelter.

The Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi provides an opportunity to teach children about endangered or abused animals and what we can do to help.
